A Tour of the University of Brighton

The University of Brighton is renowned for its cutting-edge facilities, industry partnerships, and innovative approach to education. Recently, we had the privilege of being given a tour by Lorraine Davies, the SME (Small and Medium Enterprise) Engagement Management Officer, whose role involves bridging the gap between academia and industry. Her deep knowledge of the university’s facilities and partnerships made the tour an enlightening experience, particularly when exploring the Engineering and Technology departments, including the Robotics Lab, the Advanced Immersive Learning Environment (AILE), and the Tooling Department, as well as the exciting world of 3D simulation racing and gaming.

Where Innovation Meets Automation

Our first stop was the Robotics Lab, a hub of technological advancement where students and researchers work on everything from industrial automation to artificial intelligence. The lab is equipped with state-of-the-art robotic arms, collaborative robots (cobots), and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) used for research in manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics.

One standout project was a humanoid robot designed for social interaction, capable of recognizing faces and responding to voice commands. 

Lorraine explained how the university collaborates with local businesses to develop real-world robotic solutions. The lab also hosts workshops for SMEs looking to integrate robotics into their operations, demonstrating the university’s commitment to industry engagement.

A Gateway to Virtual Worlds

Next, we visited the Advanced Immersive Learning Environment (AILE), a facility that blends virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) for education and research. The space is used across disciplines—from architecture and healthcare to gaming and engineering—providing students with hands-on experience in immersive technologies.

Lorraine highlighted how AILE supports local businesses by offering training programs in immersive tech, helping SMEs adopt VR/AR for product design, employee training, and customer engagement. The university also works with game developers, providing access to motion capture studios and haptic feedback systems to enhance interactive experiences.

The Engineering and Technology Department

We saw where students gain hands-on experience with CNC machining, laser cutting, and injection molding. The workshop is filled with industrial-grade equipment, enabling the production of high-precision components for research and commercial projects. One project involved focusing on sustainable tooling practice and exploring biodegradable materials for prototyping.

Lorraine emphasised how the department supports apprenticeships and industry placements, ensuring students graduate with practical, employable skills. 

Where Engineering Meets Entertainment and 3D Simulation 

One of the most exciting parts of the tour was the 3D simulation racing and gaming lab, where engineering and computer science converge. The university has a full-motion racing simulator, complete with a hydraulic cockpit, force-feedback steering, and ultra-high-definition VR displays. Students use it to study vehicle dynamics, aerodynamics, and driver behavior, with applications in motorsport and automotive design.

Beyond racing, the lab also explores game development and esports. Students work with Unreal Engine and Unity to create immersive gaming experiences, from virtual reality escape rooms to AI-driven NPCs (non-player characters). 

A University Bridging Education and Industry

The tour with Lorraine Davies showcased how the University of Brighton excels in applied learning, industry collaboration, and technological innovation. From robotics and immersive tech to precision engineering and simulation gaming, the facilities are designed to equip students with real-world skills while supporting local businesses through research and development.
